Curmudgeon in the Wry 468

Tuesday, February 16, 2010---536 Words---Average Reading Time: Minute, 56 Seconds. (A pointless waste of time---time frittered away)
Offending readers and hindering productivity one issue at a time since 2001.
Virtually free of original ideas.
Warning: Contains unsound bites from the apple of life.
Often wrong…never in doubt.
Being wrong is the risk you run by thinking and acting.

Rave:
Stephen Hunter’s “I, Sniper” exceeds the high expectations I expect of Mr. Hunter’s novels, especially those in the Bob Lee Swagger series.
It is suspenseful, informative, entertaining, fast-paced and contains just the right touch of dry humor.
“I, Sniper” is a first-class, complex thriller featuring Vietnam sniper Bob Lee (“Bob the Nailer”) Swagger.
After four 60’s activists are murdered by sniper fire in three separate incidents, the authorities are convinced the culprit is the Vietnam sniper with the most confirmed kills. The evidence does not pass Bob Lee Swagger’s smell test…and the game’s afoot.
The sniper culture is depicted accurately and compellingly with precise, vivid characters and firearms info.
It grabs your attention immediately and never lets you go with a creative and inspired setup. Took me just two sessions to complete.
This is not a PC book…any novel that portrays the New York Times in a callous manner gets high marks from me.
Just spectacular.

Didjaknow: Only two colleges have produced three Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. Purdue: Len Dawson, Bob Griese and Drew Brees. Alabama: Ken Stabler, Joe Namath and Bart Starr.

Quote: “Finally, can I respectfully ask that barack obama shut up and not deliver a speech for, say, the next half hour?” ---
Burt Prelutsky.

More Burt: “So far as I’m concerned, anyone who can give conniption fits to Jon Stewart, Chris Matthews, Ellis Hennican, Keith Olbermann and David Letterman, the way that Alaska’s favorite daughter can is aces in my book.”

Truism: The next guy who plays defense in the NBA All Star game will be the first.

Didjaknow: No Big Ten school owns a winning record versus Purdue Men’s Basketball.

On my “to don’t” list: Watching the Winter Olympics.
+++++++
Rave: I make a point of watching
“White Collar” (USA Network, 10 PM, Tuesdays) and “Burn Notice” (same network, same time on Thursdays). “In Plain Sight” returns in the spring. USA has a stellar lineup of original shows---characters welcome.

Rave:
USA’s promo for “Psych” using the takeoff on “Private Eyes” by Hall and Oates is a keeper.

Stats: Duke Basketball Coach
Mike Krzyzewski has coached more games with Duke ranked number one (190) than unranked (144). A most extraordinary display of excellence.
+++++++
But, who’s counting: There were 48 minutes of commercials during the Super Bowl if you had lost count.

If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If you can’t, thank the teacher’s union.
If you are reading it in English, thank a Veteran.
That is all.
As you were.
